According to the Minister of road transport and highways Kamal Nath-. Replacing the manual toll transaction all vehicles will pay toll through electronic tags across all national highways from May 2012. The system will based on the Radio frequency identification technology (RFIT).Passive RFID will ensure that a person can travel from Kashmir to Kanyakumari without stopping anywhere. The revenue leakages at present are at least 15 per cent of the toll collection, which comes to about Rs 300 crore,”

According to the IANS report-

The government had constituted a committee headed by former Infosys Chief Executive and Unique Identification Authority Chairman Nandan Nilekani for this purpose.They said that the  challenge was to have a technology which was modern, user friendly and has international standards. India has about 71,000 km of national highways, but toll is collected on only 8,500 km. The government plans to increase this to at least 30,000 km in the next five years. This will prove as a good  step in the favour of government as well as the citizen of the country.

How it will work-

Every car owner has to purchase a RFID tag which will cost Rs.100 and will be stuck on the windscreen of the vehicle.Now whenever the vehicle passes through thelane of the  toll booth across the country,   the system will identify the car and charge the appropriate  toll and it will be debited from your account.This system will help people in so many ways that it avoid time wasting, exchange of cash, and will prove effective in the tracking os stolen vehicles.Currently this technology is used in some countries like USA, Canada, Argentina,Mexico and Chile.

In the first phase 10 such auto rickshaws named as E-Rick will be introduced to commuters in Delhi, and later 4,000 such rickshaws can be seen on Delhi roads.

Here is the list of Facts, which can help you understand E-Rick  –

• E-Rick, will be battery operated luxurious auto-rickshaws which will be pollution-free with a digitally-controlled electric propelling system.
• Capital will witness at least 4,000 such rickshaws at all the historical places and main markets like Alaknanda shopping complex, Green Park, AIIMS, Chandani Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, New Friends Colony, Rajauri Garden, Janakpuri and Karolbagh, Delhi University, and Laxmi Nagar.
• Later this will be also extended to Domestic and International airports and Metro Stations in the Capital, thereafter.
• 10 such auto-rickshaws on an experimental basis will be launched before the Common wealth Games.
• E-Rick is also seen as Metro Feeder Service, so as to make the travelling easier and comfy to the Metro Commuters.
• E-Rick will be GPS enabled.
• E-Rick will have trained drivers, who will be fluent in English and also efficient enough to take the tourists to popular destinations across the city.
• A tie-up has been done with a private company, which will recruit the rickshaw drivers on salary basis, and will also provide a medical insurance to them.
• The ride on E-Rick would be cheap (expected to be Rs. 10-15).
• Senior citizens won’t be charged for the E-Rick ride.
• E-Rick will run in the Light motor vehicle lane.
• Government will collect the revenue generated from the ads on these rickshaws from the company on a per rickshaw basis.
• Facilities like LCD may be included in these Rickshaws at later stage, depending upon the level of popularity of the E-Rick.

According to me, the concept sounds great in all respect, it’s a Green option, commuting will be simpler as a combo of Metro and E-Rick, Fare is pretty reasonable.

So, after the Gurgaon-Delhi Metro connectivity, E-Rick is something one will try to grab during the next visit to Delhi, isn’t it? And may be it should be started in Mumbai where the fare hike is already a pain for the people.

• Will be the world’s longest tunnel at over 13,000 ft.

According to this circular of RBI, ( Direct PDF File )  Mandatory Features to be incorporated are :

• All the cheques being manufactured at the initial stage should continue maintaining the guidelines of Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) technology. All the cheques being manufactured should be of standard form size, MICR band, and quality of paper etc. In addition to it RBI has added few more mandatory features in the paper being used to manufacture cheque. The paper used in manufacturing of cheque should give a visible result if any of the chemicals or acids is being used for fraud purpose. Moreover the paper should be dull under Ultra Violet light.
• Standardised watermark “CTS-INDIA” to be used on all the cheques which will be visible while seen through any light source. It should be oval in shape with 2.6 to 3.0 cms in diameter. In consultation with Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) / National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) the standard watermark will be decided.

• To fight against the colour photocopy or scanned colour images of a cheque pantograph with hidden / embedded “COPY” or “VOID” feature shall be included in the cheques. There will be a specified resolution in CTS feature used in this pantograph which will not be visible in normal cheques. But will be visible in photocopies and scanned colour images as resolution used in this format will not be in CTS prescribed format.
• The bank’s logo should be printed in ultra-violet (UV) ink. This logo will be again visible in UV-enabled scanners / lamps.
• Few fields will be made mandatory on the cheques that will enable data capturing by Optical / Image Character Recognition (OCR / ICR). Further to ensure better quality and content of image light / pastel colour will be made mandatory on cheque so that the ration between the Print / Dynamic Contrast (PCR / DCR) is more than 60%.
• Strong step has been taken by RBI to control fraud. Customers will not be allowed to alter the amount and the payee name while issuing cheques. If done these cheques will not be honoured with effective 1^st of July 2010. Here I doubt as many of us are not aware of the said guideline by RBI.

While we are on long tour we at times fail to charge our mobiles frequently and at times mobile gets switch off. And without mobile especially in remote areas communication gets distracted. And in need of urgency we fail to get connect. On these interior routes we come across many dhabas where we generally halt for some refreshments. Theses dhabas run their business on diesel power generators due to lack of regular power supply. 

What theses dhabawalas have started doing is they are giving chance to charge mobile to the on route travelers, charge being Rs 3 to Rs 5 for 30 minutes. This has become an additional income for these dhabawalas and they are earning around Rs 200 – Rs 400 daily. The above business is practices especially in Bihar. Bihar is the most effected place due to no-power supply for long stretches. 

Now the Government has become enthusiastic seeing the concept of business. The Government in support of it is planning to provide a combination of non-conventional energy tool and some earning opportunity. More clearly Government wants to supply solar LED lanterns with mobile charging facility to them. This is yet another innovative business that the Government is planning to do. 

BTL (Beltron Telecommunication Ltd) will be buying 3.3 lakhs of these solar lanterns from Hyderabad based MIC Electronics for Rs 66 crore which in turn will be sold to people at a subsidiary rate. Keeping this in mind, According to the International Telecommunication union(ITU) and Leading  United Nation agency  for information and Communication Technologies(ICT),  an energy efficient standard charger for all mobiles phones will soon be introduced in the global market.

On Monday, the first day of the World Telecommunication Development Conference, ITU official announced that the standard mobile phone charger is ready to be introduced in the market. The new Universal charging solution underlines the role of ICT in providing the solution towards mitigating climate change.

According to the director of Telecommunication Standard Bureau (TSU), it will be a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of the mobile charging. The new Universal charger will reduce 13.6 million tonnes of CO2 emission each year and 82,000 tonnes of dismissed chargers.

The standardisation of technology used in the new phone charger enable the same charger to be used for all the future hand sets irrespective of make and model, it will be accepted by all the telecom companies.
