Ever been in a situation where you have lost your wallet along with your several other important documents? Or your mobile phone has been stolen? In such a situation, you would first need to file an FIR with the police. But did you know that you don’t necessarily have to visit your nearest police station to file an FIR? You can do it online as well.
Many people are afraid to go to the police station as they believe they would be harassed by the police. So, if you are one of these people, don’t worry as you have an alternative way to file an FIR. India has moved towards a digitalized world and you can now register your FIR or police complaint right from your computer or smartphone.
Now, as you can see, I used two different words, FIR, Police Complaint. So you must be thinking what is the difference between all the three. Let me clear your doubts. FIR, as the name suggests, is the First Information Report, which is prepared by the police officer after receiving the information about any cognizable offence.
A police complaint can be stated as an allegation which is filed in the form of a registered report submitted by you and is to be presented in front of the magistrate either in writing or oral form. This report does not include FIR. It is pertinent to mention that an online FIR can be filed only a for cognizable offences where the police can arrest the accused person without any warrant. But in case of non-cognizable offences, for example, cheating, assault, stalking etc, only a police complaint can be filed online and not FIR.
File an FIR or Police Complaint Online
Step 1: The first step in this process is to visit the official website of your state’s police department. For e.g. for Delhi, you have to visit delhipolice.nic.in. In this guide, I will be showing you the steps to file an FIR if you lost your smartphone.
Step 2: Once the website is opened, click on the Citizen Services tab on the home page followed by the “lost and found” option. If you want to file an FIR or complaint about any other issue, select the appropriate category.
Step 3: Once you click on the “lost and found “option, you will see 4 different options namely Retrieve, Register, Search found articles and FAQ. You have to click on to “Register”.
Step 4: After selecting the option, you will find a registration form which would be asking several questions like Complainant’s name, address, email ID, date and place of loss, description of the lost article, etc. Fill that form very carefully as based upon this information, your FIR would be registered.
Step 5: After carefully filing all the requisite information of that form, you are required to enter one captcha code mentioned below that form. After entering the code, once again go through your form. If any information has to be edited or omitted, do the same, else click on the “Submit” button.
Step 6: You have successfully registered your complaint. Check your email which you had provided during the information. A copy of your e-report will be sent to your e-mail ID. I would suggest you take a print out of that report for future reference.
