India is one of the largest democracy in the world. One of the reason that makes a country democratic is its right to votes to its citizens. However many of us are not bothered and don’t even know details of our polling booth also. Indian Government has provided many ways to find this and one of the ways is though SMS.  But before that :

What is Electoral roll ?

An electoral roll is a list of all eligible citizens who are entitled to cast their vote in an election. The electoral rolls are prepared according to Assembly Constituency and  for any Assembly Constituency is sub divided into parts corresponding with the polling booths. The list is revised and prepare on every first working day in the month of January.

How to find Details of Electoral:

  • Go to Election Commission of India Official Website and choose Link to State CEO from the menu on left.
  • Select your state and this will take you to the Official Site according to the state.
  • Here you will have to search for a link which gives you a number where one can send SMS to get Electoral Details.
  • In case you cannot find any link, use the Search by Name or Address option to find the details.

I am using West Bengal as an example here.

Now, you can get your Electoral detail by sending your voter card number as a sms  to 9433633333. This will tell your  Electoral details.

Electoral Details

According to my finding this feature is not available for all the states and some states like West Bengal, search doesn’t work. Hopefully this will be fixed at some point of time.

Who can vote:

In India, any citizen over the age of 18 can vote in an election. The right to vote is irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender. Those who are deemed unsound of mind, and people convicted of certain criminal offences are not allowed to vote.
