It started with the Delhi Police department. They became transparent by letting people download FIR copy from their portal if you have necessary details including the FIR number. Today, most of the Polic Departments offer this facility. Citizens under which you can download FIR copy online without standing in a queue and without wasting your time.
How to download FIR copy online from State Police Website
The move comes following a direction by the Delhi high court on December 6th, 2010. It said an accused is entitled to get a copy of the FIR within 24 hours of its registration. The court had said the FIRs should be uploaded online within 24 hours of its registration though it exempted the force from making public FIRs on sensitive issues.
- Visit the State Police Station website
- Find the FIR page
- Enter FIR no, Police Station name, and any other detail
- Search and download the copy of FIR when it appears in the result
For a proper search, a Fir number is necessary. If you are the person who filed an FIR, you can get a copy from the Police Station itself. If not, you will need the FIR number; Police Station details to download the FIR copy online for yourself.
Some FIRs are also made public. However, you still need to know a lot of details.
- District, Police Station, and Year (mandatory fields)
- Date range (i.e., enter FIR DATE FROM and TO fields)
- Name of one of the Accused, Complainant, or Victim.
- You can enter partial names also
- Click on Search Button to proceed.

CCTNS or Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems
CCTNS is a project under the Indian Government to make Crime and Criminal tracking online. It has integrated more than 14,000 police stations across the country. The National Crime Records Bureau implements the project. It is part of e-Governance. It came into the picture after the Mumbai attack in 2008 and finally started in 2009. Apart from FIR, it also maintains investigation and charge sheets in all police stations.
Its been 10 years and the system has matured. Almost everything in the Police department has gone online. You can even get a copy of Challan. Almost every police station has the option to download FIR copy online.
